What certified translation means

What a Certified Translation Includes

A certified translation is a professional translation accompanied by a signed statement in which the translator certifies that the translation is accurate and complete to the best of their knowledge and ability. This certification statement is the translator's formal declaration of responsibility for the quality of the work.

Certified translations are commonly required by government agencies, courts, immigration authorities, universities, and financial institutions. The terminology varies — you may see it described as a certified translation, sworn translation, or official translation — but the core requirement is the same: a signed statement from a qualified translator. The wording may be adapted to meet the specific requirements of the receiving institution.

As a sworn translator certified by the Governor of DKI Jakarta under Decree No. 1690/2007, my certified translations include a formal certification statement, translator signature, and where required, official letterhead — meeting the requirements of Indonesian courts, embassies, and government institutions.

Sample Certification Statement

I, Mulyadi Subali, certified translator for the Indonesian and English languages, hereby certify that the attached translation of the [document name] is, to the best of my knowledge and ability, a true and accurate translation of the original Indonesian document.

I further certify that I am competent to translate from Indonesian into English and that this translation meets professional standards for accuracy and completeness.

Subject expertise

Subject-Matter Expertise Built Over 20 Years

Accurate translation requires more than bilingual fluency. It requires deep familiarity with the terminology, conventions, and context of the subject matter. A generalist translator, however capable in language terms, cannot handle the industry-specific nuance that technical, legal, or financial documents demand.

Since beginning my career as Language Lead at the World Bank, Ford Motor, Toyota, and UOB Bank, I have built the subject-matter depth that separates translations that read well from ones that hold up under professional scrutiny.

  • Legal & Compliance Contracts, court documents, regulatory filings, notarial deeds
  • Financial & Banking Annual reports, financial statements, banking documents — from in-house Language Lead experience at UOB Bank
  • Technical & Automotive Engineering specs, technical manuals, product documentation — from in-house Language Lead experience at Ford Motor and Toyota
  • Development & International Aid Project reports, policy documents, institutional communications — from in-house Language Lead experience at the World Bank
  • Marketing & Corporate Communications Brand materials, company profiles, investor relations content

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Document translation is the professional conversion of a text from one language to another — accurate, fluent, and fit for its intended audience. A certified translation goes one step further: it includes a signed certification statement in which the translator formally certifies that the translation is accurate and complete. A sworn translation is the highest level: the translator is officially authorised by a government body — in my case, by decree of the Governor of DKI Jakarta — and the certified translation carries full legal weight for use in legal proceedings, court submissions, embassy filings, and government applications. If you are unsure which service you need, describe the intended use and I will advise accordingly.

Not always. A certified translation — one that includes a signed certification statement from a qualified translator — is sufficient for most government agencies, universities, financial institutions, and immigration authorities. Notarization by a notary public is an additional step that some specific institutions require, where the notary public verifies the translator's signature rather than the translation itself. If your receiving institution requires notarization in addition to certified translation, please indicate this when you place your order and I will arrange accordingly.

Yes. For text-based PDFs, I work directly from the file — no retyping required. For scanned PDFs or image-based documents, I can work from the scan, though turnaround time may be slightly longer. The certified translation is delivered in Word or PDF format with the certification statement included, depending on your preference.

Translation is priced per source word, with the rate depending on the language direction, subject matter complexity, and turnaround requirement. Indonesian–English and English–Indonesian are priced differently. Financial, legal, and technical documents typically attract a specialist rate due to terminology density. Certified translation includes the certification statement at no additional charge. For ongoing agency clients, volume rates and retainer arrangements are available. Request a quote for an accurate project-specific figure.

For standard documents (up to 2,000 words), certified translation is typically delivered within 1–2 business days. Larger documents or those with complex formatting may require 3–5 business days. Rush delivery is available for urgent orders — translations are commonly required quickly for immigration deadlines or legal proceedings, and I accommodate this where possible. Please indicate your deadline when submitting your request and I will confirm feasibility with your quote.

You can verify my credentials directly. My sworn translator certification was issued by the Governor of DKI Jakarta (Decree No. 1690/2007). I hold dual certified translation certifications from Universitas Indonesia for both translation directions. My ProZ Certified PRO status is publicly verifiable on the ProZ.com platform. For clients who require formal verification before placing an order, I am happy to provide copies of my certification documents on request.

Yes. All documents submitted for translation are treated as strictly confidential. I do not use or retain client documents beyond the scope of the commissioned translation. For sensitive corporate or legal material, I am happy to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) before work begins.

Yes — a significant portion of my work comes from translation agencies (LSPs) who engage me as a freelance vendor for Indonesian–English certified translation projects. I am CAT tool-compatible (Trados Studio, memoQ, Wordfast), experienced in agency workflows, and available for both regular and one-off assignments. Visit the Work With Agencies page for my full vendor profile and onboarding information.
